Nutrient Input and Removal Verification

This project will purchase portable scales, to be owned and managed by Headwaters Soil and Water Conservation District, for farmers to borrow for weighing spreader loads of animal wastes applied to and yields harvested from fields.  This data is used to prepare Nutrient Management Plans that help farmers use the nutrients in animal wastes at the proper rates and avoid runoff.  The purpose of this project is to help farmers create realistic nutrient management plans for their farms and increase the number of Nutrient Management Plans that are followed thereby reducing the nutrient runoff and enrichment of streams and rivers.  A recently completed Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission report showed that when landowners thought their plan was realistic, they were more likely to follow it.

Goal:  Optimizing nutrient management and utilization in the Valley

Committee Assigned to:  Nutrient Management
