Coordinator’s Report

Project Activity

 

Rural Economic Vitality: 

  • Will attend Soybean Study Group Meeting, Nov. 5, 2004; background research on possible grant funding
  • Teleconference with Bobby Clark and Robin Jones from the Virginia Mines Minerals and Energy about VMME potentially funding a portion of the project
  • Spoke with and worked to invite Paul Darby, consulting expert on cooperatives, to attend Nov. 5 meeting

 

Open Space, Forestry, and Farmland Preservation and Community Development: 

  • Met with VA PDR managers about possible funding mechanisms for PDR programs.
  • Met with Ligon Webb and Rhonda Henderson, Rockingham County, to get PDR needs assessment
  • Met with conservation easement authority committee in Frederick County about possible PDR program and why the county might want an authority
  • Learned about West Virginia’s funding for PDRs on county level; TEA-21 and DOT matches for FRPP
  • Received letter/contract stipulating $25,000 grant to Shenandoah RC&D for funding conservation easement purchase within the service region to be completed within a year.
  • Met with Virginia Dept. of Forestry officials in Shenandoah County to explore joint firewise/waterwise/plantwise project and tour possible demonstration property
  • Met with committee twice
  • Followed up with Stacy Turner, City of Harrisonburg, on draft tree ordinance for city

 

Water Quality/Quantity

  • Met with Tom Benzing about potential projects that need follow-up and ideas for pending proposals
  • Met with Steve Talley of CVI about funding potential projects with water quality component

 

Nutrient Management

  • Met with Committee to review pending proposals and share information gathered from projects in other parts of the southeast region
  • Continued work as chair of Waste Solutions subcommittee for non-technology speakers
  • Submitted on letter of inquiry to Tellabs Foundation regarding a nutrient management proposal
  • Researched further prospects for funding additional nutrient management proposals

 

Education and Information

  • Reviewed several proposals brought to the committee, suggested modifications
  • Goal to get website up in draft form prior to the January Council meeting

 

Grants/Funding

  • Received Beirne Carter Grant for $25,000 for easement purchase
  • Submitted one letter of inquiry to a foundation regarding a nutrient management proposal
  • Have five grants on the burner for nutrient management, sustainable agriculture, and firewise/waterwise/plantwise project

General activities

  • Interviewed, checked references, extended offer to new secretary
  • Organized VARCDC Legislative Committee teleconference
  • Attended VARCDC fall meeting in Charlottesville
  • Kept up with minutes/notes from all committee and Council meetings.  Sent out all meeting-related materials to Council members, associate members and interested others; worked with treasurer on checks needed/deposits

 

NRCS Activities

  • All-employees meeting Nov. 2-4 in Williamsburg
  • Southeast Association meeting in Savannah Sept. 22-25
  • Ice-breaker committee for all-employees meeting
  • Year-end review
  • Filing appropriate federal forms for reimbursement and other related to RC&D coordinator financial disclosure
  • Attended team meetings

 

Members/Associate Members

  • Attended Headwaters SWCD to update them on project progress; in process Lord Fairfax and Shenandoah
  • Met with VCC’s land protection committee to update about RC&D
  • Attended Pure Water Forum Ways and Means committee to offer advice on funding/annual solicitation letter
  • Met with Woodstock Town Manager
  • Talked with Frederick County CE authority committee on what RC&D could do for them and the county
