Coordinator’s Report

Project Activity

Rural Economic Vitality: 

  • Soybean Study Group dissolved for now as they pursue LLC; will contact us if they need anything further
  • Attended JMU Biodiesel Workshop
  • Met with committee Dec. 29 to review I-81 proposal, submitted by Bud Nagelvoort in 2003, and to discuss projects/ideas for expending the Agua Fund money

 

Open Space, Forestry, and Farmland Preservation and Community Development: 

  • Attended Valley Conservation Council rural zoning session in Rockingham County
  • Talked with several planners, Board of Supervisors members about their information needs related to PDRs at VCC’s rural zoning session
  • Attended Rural Preservation Workshop in Hanover County
  • Worked with Joan to present a check for $25,000 to the Clarke County Conservation Easement Authority on December 15 to purchase an easement on a qualifying property within the next year
  • Wrote press release and worked with Clarke County media consultant to get some press coverage of RC&D contribution to Clarke County
  • Met with committee

 

Water Quality/Quantity

 

Nutrient Management

  • Sent committee members proposals that have come in for their review; suggested meeting
  • Continued work with Waste Solutions Forum:  Funding Committee; Forum Agenda Committee; Am now coordinating required briefing papers and format; several teleconferences; meeting in Charlottesville; reviewed numerous documents, including invitation letter, invitee list, agenda, forum briefing materials, format for submitted papers, etc.

 

Education and Information

  • Worked with Lorraine, Jim Lawrence and committee members to get RC&D website outline and appropriate documents to Lorraine to put up on the web
  • Worked with Jim Lawrence to put together workshop on easements for Frederick County  January 25 at Lord Fairfax Community College
  • Met with committee

 

Executive Committee

·        Worked with Joan to tweak existing bylaws for Council consideration

·        Worked to collect information on Council insurance – what kind of coverage other RC&D’s obtain in Virginia

·        Worked to collect information on dues paid to Councils by RC&D members for use when considering future dues policies by Shenandoah RC&D

·        Met with committee, prepared needed documents

 

Grants/Funding

  • Received $55,000 from the Agua Fund, $5,000  of which is for Council operations, to enhance rural vitality with a special emphasis on sustainable agriculture
  • Submitted a proposal to the Environmental Research and Education Fund (EREF) in Arlington for the Poultry Litter Transport project
  • Drafted a proposal, submitted by VA Tech, for Waste Solutions Forum, to EREF
  • Submitted a proposal to the Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Community Foundation for the Firewise/Plantwise/Waterwise demonstration project in Augusta County
  • Attended National Fish and Wildlife Foundation informational meeting on small watershed grants

 

General activities

  • New assistant, Lorraine Cormier, began work; helped with orientation/training
  • Organized and participated in VARCDC Forestry Committee teleconference
  • Kept up with minutes/notes from all committee and Council meetings.  Sent out all meeting-related materials to Council members, associate members and interested others; worked with treasurer on checks needed/deposits
  • Helped organize and participated in VARCDC Legislative Teleconference
  • Wrote an article about RC&D and submitted it for upcoming Pure Water Forum newsletter
  • Initiated contacts to explore interest in a forestry subcommittee

 

NRCS Activities

  • Participated in coordinator’s teleconference
  • Put together coordinator’s workload analysis as part of the Virginia RC&D team plan
  • Completed Introduction to NRCS module, required for new employees

 

Members/Associate Members

  • Attended Lord Fairfax and Shenandoah Valley SWCD to update them on project progress
  • Met with VCC’s land protection committee to update about RC&D

 

Scheduled Leave

  • December 20-24, 2004
