OUR FORESTS: A
RENEWABLE RESOURCE
Virginia has abundant
forests that provide natural beauty, habitat, jobs, an important
economic sector, and a wide array of forest products. Virginia has 15.7
million acres of forest land, which cover about 62 percent of the
State. Of that amount, 12.2 million acres, or 66 percent, is in private
ownership by some 373,000 individuals. 144,000 Virginians are employed
in forestry-related jobs. Forestry generates $23.4 billion annually in
forest products and generates an additional $4.1 billion in social and
